University of Utah (U of U) Utes Football Players Taken in the 2010 NFL Draft - 6 Selected

The University of Utah (U of U) Utes had six players from their football program taken in the 2010 NFL Draft that was held in New York City in April. Six players selected in the draft from Utah are more than any of the conference competitors that the University of Utah faces in the Mountain West Conference that the program competes in.

The six individuals from the Utes who were recently drafted by National Football League (NFL) franchises in 2010 are:

    Koa Misi (defensive end) - picked by the Miami Dolphins in the second round with the 40th overall selection
    Zane Beadles (offensive tackle) - selected by the Denver Broncos with the 45th overall pick in the second round
    Robert Johnson (safety) - chosen in the fifth round by the Tennessee Titans as the 148th overall player taken
    David Reed (wide receiver) - picked up by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round as the 156th player selected
    Stevenson Sylvester (linebacker) - Pittsburgh Steelers selection in the fifth round with the 166th overall pick
    R.J. Stanford (cornerback) - seventh round selection by the Carolina Panthers with the 223td overall pick

Koa Misi, the first U of U football player taken in the 2010 NFL Draft is a 6'3" 263 pound athlete with the defensive versatility to play a combination of defensive end and outside linebacker positions. Koa, originally from Santa Rosa, California, is a player that the Miami Dolphins hope will add some youth, strength, and versatility to the south Florida defense.

Zane Beadles along with Koa Misi were the only two of the six Utah players selected to be picked before the fifth round. Zane is a 6'4" 310 pound offensive lineman from Casper, Wyoming. Although Zane played tackle in high school and college the Denver Broncos plan to at least initially utilize his skills at the guard position next to the center. As an interior lineman for the Denver Broncos, Beadles will be called upon to insure middle of the pocket protection against large defensive tackles for his quarterback.

In total four of the six Utah players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft are from the defensive side of the ball while only two are offensive players. During the 2008 and 2009 football seasons the Utah Utes went a combined 23-3 with post season bowl victories in both the Sugar Bowl (2008) and Poinsettia Bowl (2009). Much of the success of the Salt Lake City based football program can be attributed to the talented defensive players.
